Sunday Homily – 12th Sunday of Ordinary Time (Year B)

Hearty Welcome to this blog. We are on the 12th Sunday in ordinary time dated on 23rd June 2024. Through this article We will get to know what God wants from us this week.

Summary of the Readings

First Reading: Job 38:1, 8-11

In the first reading from the book of Job, God reminds Job of his power over all creation during the storm.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-17

In the second reading from the second letter of Corinthians, Paul speaks of the life-changing power of Christ’s love and urges us to live in Christ as new creations.

Gospel: Mark 4:35-41

In the Gospel, we see Jesus calming down the violent sea of Galilee, symbolising his power over nature and ability to bring peace in violent situations.

Homily

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today, the readings offer a profound message of trust, faith, and the presence of God in our lives.

God has control over even humanly uncontrollable and impossible situations. It happens only when we completely surrender ourselves to his care and guidance. From today’s Gospel, we can identify this fact. The Lake of Galilee is known to have sudden and fierce storms. These storms terrify even a well-versed fisherman.

It is very scary even to imagine the situation the disciples faced in the boat. In their outburst of fear, they turned back to Jesus, asleep in the boat. Jesus woke from his sleep and rebuked the wind by uttering peace! Be still! Instantly, the wind ceased, which brought a great calm situation.

This story is about a physical miracle and a deep spiritual truth. Even in times of uncontrollable, toughest, and impossible life storms, Jesus can bring peace. He can calm the whirlwinds within our hearts. From the first reading, it is clear that God has complete control over everything, even us. But in human life, the control button is in our hands.

In the freedom of humans, God is helpless. Only when we allow our problems to be taken over by God will he do the impossible. Saint Paul speaks of the transformative power of Jesus’ love. When we love and live in Christ, we will become Christ-like humans, where our old being is transformed into a new being. Our thoughts, words, and deeds will become like Christ.

We will think what Christ thinks, speak what Christ would say, and do what Christ does. All these are possible only by us while we completely surrender ourselves to him who can make the best out of us.

Applications for Life:

Peace in Sorrow: When we ask Jesus for help, we experience sorrowful conditions, but he offers us peace, comfort, and hope. He transforms the darkness of death into the light of eternal life.

Peace in doubt: Life offers many crossroads, which inevitably put us in trouble of confusion and doubt. When we have no way to turn, we must turn to Jesus, who is the only way to overcome doubts. This simple prayer would help you find a way through life: “Lord, what do you want me to do?”

Peace in Anxiety: Fear and worry are common evils against peace. We are concerned about our future, loved ones, and uncertain situations. When we face these fears, our only help is from Jesus. As the disciples received peace after crying out to Jesus to save, we must also surrender and ask Jesus to give courage to face the situation. We can’t expect Jesus to be physically present for us, but he would give us strength to face difficulties confidently.

Dear brothers and sisters, always remember that Jesus is with us. His presence gives us peace, certainty, and confidence. Let us invite Him into our lives by surrendering so that we may become a new creation like Him and bring peace and love to the world in need. Amen
